Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page!
We are taking steps to help JDRF achieve its goal of improving the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D) by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. By joining our Walk Team and making a donation, you will be helping us to raise funds to directly support research with the greatest potential to conquer this disease.
3 years, 3 months, and 23 days. On walk day, that's how long Josh will have had to endure this disease. Not very long in the span of his lifetime. But it seems like forever!
That's 1208 days, with an average of 9 finger pokes a day (sometimes less, sometimes more). That's 10,872 times his fingers have been poked by a needle and squeezed for blood in the last 3 years!
For the first 6 months he was on insulin shots (approximately 6 per day). That's over a 1000 injections for a six year old little boy. He now gets a shot roughly 5 times a week, sometimes more, sometimes less, whenever his pump isn't doing it's job at the moment. So 2 and half years of 5 shots a week is 650 injections.
Now he has an insulin pump. It's been so much nicer! He usually only has to change his pump site every 2 days. But this this year he struggled with an adhesive allergy and for large portions of the year, we were having to change his pump sites daily. Since the end of January 2011, he has had to be poked in the belly, the bottom, the stomach, or the arm in order chage that pump site nearly 575 times.
By my count, my 9 year old has been poked with a needle over 13000 times in the last 3 years, largely by me.
Can you see no why we want so badly for this diease to go away??!!
We know it's just about near impossible to give even to worthy causes in these times. And we aren't expecting much more than your awareness, and understanding. But, if you are able to give anything, even just a couple of dollars, every little bit will help. I have been to several JDRF conferences, and have seen the good work they are doing. Progress IS being made.
If you would like to join us on walk day, you are wecome to do that too!
Thank you for your support! It means the world to Josh and to us!
