Dear Family & Friends, September 14, 2013
We can’t thank you enough for your enormous show of support last year for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and our Walk to Cure Diabetes Team, “Team Erica”!! We raised a lot of money last year and had over 25 Walkers participate, making us the 15th top Walk Teams for the Philadelphia Walk!! Thank you so much!
Many of you know why we participate in the Walk. For those of you who do not, Erica was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes (or Type 1 Diabetes) in 2009. Erica uses an insulin pump, glucose monitors and carb-counting every day to stay alive and the daily regimen is both tiring and unyielding. This disease demands one’s attention 24 hours a day in order to stay healthy and alive. Erica checks her blood sugar levels by pricking her fingers 10-12 times a day and takes insulin every time she eats anything. Insulin keeps her alive, but it is not a cure and, over time, diabetes takes an enormous toll on the body.
The day-by-day, minute-by-minute blood testing, meal planning, carbohydrate counting, and adjusting for exercise, illness, or growth all seem like a series of sprint runs 24/7. The pressure to “get it right” can be overwhelming, not to mention exhausting. And yet, we cannot lose our focus, because long-term blood sugar control is what we’re after. This is where living with diabetes feels more like running a marathon. It is a long, arduous race against the devastating complications of this very complex disease.
Due to not being able to have our 2nd annual “Help Erica Find a Cure” benefit “Team Erica” is going to being asking for the help of our family and friends in our fundraising efforts. We are asking you to consider joining our team and helping us raise funds. This can be done two ways. Team Erica will once again convene at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art at 8:30am on October 27th. We invite you to join us this year for the walk and or Help Find A Cure for T1D. We would LOVE to have you walk with us! Please consider joining Team JDRF and walking with us .
