My name is Erik Murphy; I am 13 years old and a 8th Grader at Scoggins Middle School. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on November 7, 2002. Even though I don’t remember what life was like before diabetes, I would love to find out what it would be like to be like everyone else who does not need to take insulin daily to survive. I did get an insulin pump six years ago and life is much easier now then when I had to have 4 or 5 shots per day. I still check my blood sugar 8 – 10 times a day, but that is the easy part. We have had our ups and downs with the pump, but for the most part life is much better for me now.
There is currently no cure for diabetes, but researchers are getting closer every year. If research can continue in the future the Doctors and Scientists are hoping that there will be a cure someday soon. Attending Camp Sweeney in the summer teaches me a lot about Diabetes and how it affects body changes as I am getting older and makes me remember that there are lots of kids like me. This year was totally awesome and I can’t wait to go back next year.
This will be our 11th year of walking to help raise funds, bring awareness and support the JDRF. This year the WALK TO CURE DIABETES benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will be held on September 28th, 2013, at Victory Park in Dallas. I am very excited and it always amazes me to see the thousands of people walking and raising money to help find a cure, not just for me, but for the thousands of people that are affected by this Disease. Did you know that one out of every 300 children will be diagnosed this year?
I hope you will consider sponsoring my participation in this event; any amount will help the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Checks should be made payable to the JDRF and can be mailed to me at 3473 Estes Park Lane, McKinney, TX 75070 or you can make a donation online at www.jdrf.org click on donate, click on search for walker and enter our info Erik Murphy, Erik’s Team. All donations are tax deductible. 80% of every dollar raised goes towards finding a cure, so please help me get a step closer to living a life without Diabetes.
Thank you for considering this request. If you would like to join us on walk day or if you have any questions about the Walk to Cure Diabetes, or the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, please do not hesitate to call us.
