Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
TJ was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on December 21, 2011 at just 15 months of age. I've only heard of a few other children diagnosed that early. It was a very hard week. All of a sudden, our 'sick' kid was a Type 1 child. All of a sudden, food needed to be counted and weighed and measured. All of a sudden, our baby had to be poked, prodded and shot 16 times, day and night. All of a sudden, if our child was crying it could be for a very serious reason. All of a sudden, a sleeping baby made us nervous. All of a sudden, he was changed and so were we.
Now we have an insulin pump. Now he can check his own finger and loves to help dose himself. Now we swim and jump and play like every other kid. Now we eat at restaurants and can guess the carbs precisely. Now we can let him sleep. Now we have a new normal and that's okay.
Hope is obtainable and hope is tangible through JDRF's research.
The challenge we've set ourselves - to raise money for JDRF and to walk - is modest compared to the daily challenges of TJ's life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage his disease.
