Hello friends and family! On Saturday, February 22, we'll be participating in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes for our fifth consecutive year (listed as Team Noah - Archers) - along with 20,000 other walkers at the Mall of America- to show our support for Noah and others with Type 1 Diabetes. JDRF is the leading foundation funding Type 1 Diabetes research and is working to raise $2.1MM through this year's Walk. Our team goal is to raise $500 and to have fun together on Walk Day - which is always entertaining and energizing!
You can check out jdrf.org if you care to learn more about the foundation or the progress they're making towards a cure and improving the quality of life for Diabetics. Of particular note this year is their advocacy to Congress to expedite the FDA approval of the "artificial pancreas" here in the United States...it's very disappointing that this life-changing system is available to people like Noah in over 40 countries...but not the U.S. The "artificial pancreas" is actually the term for an external, integrated system which includes an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor and - as closely as possible - replicates the body's natural system.
Last year we almost lost Noah due to complications with his Diabetes - certainly the most terrifying days of our lives and it still makes us sick when we recollect. Since then, Noah's diabetes and A1C levels have been good...but we want them to be great. As such, we recently attended a 'sensor' class at our clinic to start the process of attaining a continuous glucose monitor (automatically checks Noah's blood sugar up to 24/7) for Noah and a subsequent return to insulin pump management. This won't reduce Noah's normal finger-prick BG checks, but it will provide better tools and insights to manage his diabetes.
We intend to win against Diabetes with or without a cure:To help Noah learn to manage this disease with tireless discipline, perseverance, and a healthy attitude so that he can live a long and full life.
For those of you that are able to join us, we will be meeting at American Girl Doll Store 2nd floor between 7:30 and 7:55 am (walk starts at 8am). If you are able and interested in donating, you can do so on our participant page, at jdrf.org, or the morning of the Walk. We're thankful for your prayers and participation and hope to see you at the Walk!
I'm sorry we haven't updated Noah's "Walk for the Cure" video since 2009, but for those of you that care to view it here is the address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1Ybj7Jtn08 With the exception of Noah moving from his insulin pump back to frequent insulin injections the video is still relevant.
