We will turn Type One into Type None

Welcome!

This year our family is participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes.  We were personally affected by diabetes when our now 9 year old son, Lucas, was diagnosed at 20 months of age.

Most people have a loose understanding of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).  Let me give you a look into our daily life...

Each day we check Lucas' blood sugar 8 to 10 times.  This is by a fingerstick because the forearm is not accurate enough.  We must estimate every bit of food that goes into his mouth and give insulin by injection or via a cannula beneath his skin.  This would be simple if food + insulin = normal blood sugars.  However, blood sugars are also affected by stress, hormones, illness, growth spurts, activity level, the temperature... well, you get the picture.  Diet and exercise cannot cure Type 1 diabetes, and insulin only helps us to "manage" this disease. We get up multiple times during the night to ensure his blood sugar doesn't drop so low that he succumbs to a syndrome called "dead in bed".  Dealing with this disease is a 24-hour, 365 day, for the rest of your life responsibility.  Up until this point I have used the term "we".

I use the term "we" because Clay and I would do anything for our son.  When Lucas was diagnosed, we were told that complications such as blindness, kidney failure, and neuropathy leading to the loss of limbs don't show up until "20 years into this disease...".  According to this math, that is about the same time he enters his twenties.  The same time his life as an independent young adult should begin.  This breaks my heart.  This statistic and this boy are why I am personally desperate for a cure.

I am asking for your support.  Please donate to my personal fundraising efforts, or join our team.  By doing so, you can help me and JDRF make a difference.  Not just for Lucas, but for the millions of people living each day with type 1 diabetes.

On a final note, we don't get down, we get AWESOME!

"LEGENDS OF AWESOMENESS!" thanks you for your support!
