On October 19, 2014our familywill be walking once again in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. Many of you know,we have a personal connection with type 1diabetes (T1D) that affects millionsof children and adults. Ourdaughter,Kaley, was diagnosed with T1D almost 8years ago..
As you are aware, this diagnosis ofT1D has changed all of our lives forever. Each year we have shared with youupdates and changes with our journey. In August Kaley started her freshman yearat Eastern CT State University.Sheis happy, has met lots of great people, is playing soccer and is enjoying herclasses. We want more than anything for Kaley to feel as normal as possible andpart of the college community just like any other parent of a college studentwants. However, we have a constant worry,a worry if she will to drop low in the middle of the night and no one will beaware. The adjustment of leaving home, starting college, and dealing with diabetes without the support of family, ordoctor nearby is a struggle. Over these past 8 years as a family we have facedmany challenges and within the whirlwind of those emotions, we understood thateducation is and always will be the key to a successful diabetes management.
