We will turn Type One into Type None

Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!

As you may or may not know, our son Ian was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on April 16, 2013. The diagnosis came after 2 months of warning signs including mood swings, frequent urination, excessive thirst and general crankiness. We took him to the doctor and saw a blood sugar of 581 (normal is 70-130). So, off to the emergency room we went and in two days were given a crash course in how to treat Ian's diabetes.

Once Ian started receiving insulin, we saw an immediate positive response. Of course, Ian's treatment will continue for the rest of his life. This means that he will need to check his blood sugar 6-10 times per day and will need insulin injections every time he eats…even if it’s just a snack. For the rest of his life.

Ian can eat anything he wants to eat...provided that we know how many carbohydrates are in the food and can give him the appropriate dose of insulin. Recently, he's become a much more adventurous eater, trying Taiwanese, Green and Japanese cuisine.  And, thanks to the Avengers, he has fallen in love with shawarma!  He can also participate in any and all sports or other activities like any other kid.  Right now he's doing swimming lessons, but in the fall he wants to take hockey lessons.

Ian started kindergarten last fall and has been having a blast.  The school, his teachers and classmates are all so supportive.  Ian and a classmate walk down to the nurse's office twice a day for blood sugar checks and his lunchtime shot.  HIs classmates all love going to the nurse's office with him and often get a reward for doing so!

The challenge we've set ourselves - to raise money for JDRF and to walk - is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
