I am so excited to bring Team Becka Boo to the 2014 Walk to Cure Diabetes!
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) when I ws 7 years old (26 years ago). Growing up with diabetes was hard, grammar school was no picnic and my teenage years were just as hard if not harder. I knew what I was supposed to do and what I should do, but that never stopped me from doing everything that I shouldn't have been doing, from not doing my blood, to not eating right, and above all else just not caring. I wanted to have fun with my friends and NOT be different.
Well all of this caught up to me back in 2005 when I was diagnosed with Diabetic Retinopathy. After many, many laser treatments and 5 eye surgeries (3 on my left eye and 2 on my right) I am left legally blind in my left eye and have low vision in my right. I also experienced a scare with my kidneys a couple months ago. I always thought "never me" when it came to the complications of diabetes, if I could turn back time I would like to think that I could and would change a lot of things especially and most importantly my acceptance and willingness to learn and be responsible for my own health.
I am 34 years old now and finally doing great! My A1C has been uder 6.5 for the past year and a half. My eyes are stable, not getting any worse, if anything maybe a little better and my kidneys are also stable now, all this because my diabetes is finally under control.
Someday I hope there will be a cure for T1D so that children don't have to go through life with this disease. Never give up hope on finding a cure, keep donating to the research, the prevention, and the cure for T1D. Please join our team or donate, any help is greatly appreciated!
Your donation will count towards the team's fundraising total. In addition, please give credit to the person that asked for your support to recognize them for their efforts in creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).
