We will turn Type One into Type None

Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Type One team page!

We walk for Sophie... because she deserves a cure.

Sophie has Type 1 Diabetes which is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.

Sophie was diagnosed a week before she was going to start Pre-K. We had just returned from our summer vacation and knew that something was wrong. Sophie was constantly thirsty and using the bathroom, she was losing weight to the point that when I picked her up she felt like just bones. I didn't know it at the time but my daughter's body was fighting to stay alive. After several visits to her doctor with our concerns, they finally did a simple blood glucose test and within minutes came back and told us we had to take her to the emergency room right away. That was the start of what turned into the worst day of my life. I will never forget it. On August 13, 2012 we rushed to the emergency room not sure exactly what this all meant. They told us she had Type 1 Diabetes, her body was attacking it's pancreas. She was admitted and we spent the next few days in the hospital learning how to check her blood and inject her with insulin. Once they had her stable, we were sent home to tackle this beast on our own. It is not easy, there are no days off, holidays or weekends... we fight everyday... all day and night. We test her blood by poking her finger at least 10 times a day. Then there are the injections of insulin, she gets at least 4 of those a day. She also wears a Continuous Glucose Monitor which helps keep better track of her blood glucose. We insert it on her belly and she changes it every 7 days. I am thankful everyday that there is medicine available to us so that we can battle this disease until they find a cure.

We're taking steps to help JDRF progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people's lives until no one has to fear developing this disease. By joining our Walk to Cure Diabetes team and making a donation to JDRF, you'll raise money to help fund critical T1D research and create a world without T1D.

JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.

The challenge we've set ourselves - to raise money for JDRF and to walk - is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.

Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by coming out and walking with us or making a donation to Sophie's Team, just click on one of the links to start.

Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you on Walk day!
