BREAKING NEWS: My husband Doug will be participating in the Ride with me this year! He needs to catch up on fundraising, so please donate to his page instead of mine. His page is here: http://www2.jdrf.org/goto/dougryan
(Note: Regardless of what you check off on the donation page, your name and donation amount will NOT be shown publicly - I turned that feature off.)
Hello! This year, I'll once again be taking part in JDRF's Ride to Cure Diabetes, along with hundreds of other riders across the country to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). Last year I rode 73 miles, which was the farthest I'd ever ridden. This year, I plan on doing the full 100-mile course. Here is why I'm doing this:
My 14-year-old niece Samantha was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 12 (click "2" under the photo to the right to see her picture). I am riding for her, and for all children and adults who have to deal with this disease and all that comes with it - finger pricks, insulin shots, counting every carb, and diabetes-related medical problems. Imagine telling a kid that if they go to a birthday party, or someone offers them a cookie, they have to count carbs and do math, and stick themselves with a needle - and they have to do this every time they eat. It sucks.
I was truly humbled by how many friends and family members donated to my ride last year. I wish I didn't have to ask again for donations. But T1D isn't cured yet. Samantha (and many many others) still have to deal with it, every moment of their lives. So I have to ask again, and I hope you'll donate - every little bit helps.
Did you know that:
As the leader of the type 1 diabetes community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat and prevent T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered.
Thank you for your support!
Last year, I discovered that in order to have better endurance biking up hills, I need to run once a week in order to get in better cardio shape. It seemed like just biking on hills wasn't getting me in better cardio shape. Spring training has commenced - yesterday I went running at the gym instead of using the elliptical like I normally do.
