The reason I ride!

Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

In honor of our son, Willie, I’m taking part in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes, along with hundreds of riders from around the world, to raise money for JDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

So what exactly have I committed to?  In terms of fundraising, $2000! (Eek!)  That seemed a bit intimidating to me at first, but with help from friends and family, and friends of family, and family of friends, and friends of friends and so seems completely do-able!!  Hell, if we can get the word out to 2000 people, and each of those folks donates a dollar?  Well geez, that doesn't seem so intimidating, does it?  So please, please, if you can't donate, then all I ask is that you share my page.  That'll still be helpful!

In terms of the activity?  I'm doing a "Century Ride" - 100 miles in a single day through the lovely and bucolic Champlain region of Vermont.  And THAT'S the easy part!  Prior to that, I'll be training, and training ALOT!  Over 1600 miles in the next 6 months.  Sixteen. Hundred. Miles.

Why am I riding?  Well......that one's a bit more personal.  I'm riding for my son.  I'm riding for a boy who, at the age of 4, by no fault of his own, was saddled with a burden that's his for life.  I'm riding for a boy who can't / doesn't yet understand that his condition, while manageable, will influence every activity and decision in his future.  I'm riding for a boy who sometimes breaks down in tears when he's overwhelmed by the fact that "having diabetics" makes him different than his peers.  And I'm riding for the hope that a cure can be found to lift that weight off his shoulders in time for him to just be a little boy, free of such concerns.

JDRF is working every day to change this. And every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.

Please donate and help JDRF achieve its goal of a world without Type 1 Diabetics.

Please check back to view my fundraising progress as my Ride weekend approaches. Thank you for your support.

    New motivation to ride!
The past 2 weeks have been challenging training, but least I got 2 rides in this week. And, they were at a faster pace than comparable rides a few weeks ago. However, I've got new motivation to continue to ride and exercise. Two weeks ago, my mom underwent an unexpected coronary double bypass. There are multiple reasons that contributed to the blockage which made it necessary, but chief among them is the one-two punch of poor nutrition and lack of exercise. Watching mom go through this experience was both frightening and inspiring. 24 hrs after the surgery, she was too weak to even bring a plastic fork from table to mouth, but 24hrs after that, w/ assistance, she took her first steps toward recovery. Those first steps were more demanding, more hard earned, and more impressive to me than any exertion I'd witnessed in the Army, during triathlons, or the Tough Mudder. It was an amazing and inspiring demonstration of determination and character, and I couldn't be more proud of her. Her journey of a thousand miles started that day, and in the process she reminded me that my body can achieve what my mind can conceive. Here's to perseverance! Here's to inspiration! Here's to my mom. I now have 3 loved one inspiring my to ride - not just today, not just tomorrow, but for life so that hopefully I never have to walk the same thousand miles on which mom has just started.
