This year I'm riding to turn Type One into Type None!

Hi Friends! Welcome to my JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes Page!

I’m cycling 100 miles this October as part of the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes, to raise money for JDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. This is a cause I've been involved with for a few years now and I've finally made the committment financially and personally to do this ride. I chose to ride in Nashville since that's my hometown and is the place where I've had most of my significant athletic endeavors occur. Remember my first marathon way back in 2000?!

T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is essential to turning food into energy. T1D requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.

JDRF is working every day in drastic ways to change this. And every dollar I raise helps them continue to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community until a cure is found.

I have begun the hard part of training and fundraising for this 100 mile ride, and your gift today will propel me toward the finish line. Please donate and help JDRF achieve its goal of a world without T1D.

Please check back to view my fundraising progress as my Ride weekend approaches. Thank you for your support.

The weather seems to be turning in my favor
Most of the time I complain for a day or so after the spring time change, but this year it was a welcome arrival. It meant that I can start biking to and from work! I don't live far from my office, but it's hilly in both directions. Riding my commuter bike, with the paniers and gym clothes and lunch and a book and a bike lock, it adds lots of extra weight so the hills are harder. Yay! Do you know how much I hate hills? Do you know how hilly the Nashville JDRF Ride is going to be!!!!?? Aughh.
But my first ride home was fantastic, nice 75 degrees, no asshole drivers honking at me. Even the road edges weren't too full of debris, probably thanks to the rain we've had recently. The utopia may not last, but it was a great first day.
And in a few weeks, when I've got my leg muscles used to working, I'll ride from the office to the Tuesday/Thursday night rides leaving from the Co-op. That group usually does 20-30 miles, with a couples of different speeds, so it will be a great weeknight ride to get back into. I'm looking forward to it.
I'm coming along well with my fundraising, this first month's push was fantastic and I had some luck with my Yankee Candle Fundraiser. Stay tuned for the next fun idea I have to raise money!!!
