Urge Your Senators to Support Renewal of the Special Diabetes Program

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on a legislative proposal soon that could include a multi-year renewal of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP), which funds important research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The SDP is facing a critical deadline as the funding for the program expires at the end of September. With a multi-year renewal, SDP-funded researchers all across the country will be able to continue promising clinical trials that are leading to better treatments, therapies and ultimately a cure for T1D.

Today, we need your help urging the Senate to renew the SDP now, before NIH must slow down or halt promising clinical trials. The SDP renewal is non-controversial – an overwhelming bipartisan majority of Senators and Representatives have supported the program’s renewal in the past. In fact, the U.S. House of Representatives recently approved a two-year renewal of the SDP as part of the 'Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015' (H.R. 2) by an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 392-37.

Please take action today and also share this alert with family and friends – on behalf of JDRF, your family member or loved one, and all Americans affected by T1D. Thank you for letting Congress know how important the SDP is to you, and to the future of all those with T1D.

Senator - Please Support a Two-Year SDP Renewal in the Medicare package

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent, I am writing to ask that you do all you can to ensure the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) is renewed for two-years as part of the 'Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015.' I understand the House passed this legislation recently by an overwhelming bipartisan majority, and that the Senate is expected to act within the coming days or weeks.

The SDP is set to expire this September. A two-year renewal will enable promising clinical trials to continue without interruption and will bring us closer to better treatments, prevention strategies and ultimately a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Thank you for your consideration, Senator, and for looking out for those of us who are personally affected by type 1 diabetes.
