On June 1, 2015 Jada was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a life changing autoimmune disease in which Jada's pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Type 1 diabetes requires Jada to perform 10 or more blood drawing pricks to her little fingers per day, calculations of the number of carbs before every meal, and then administering insulin shots for every meal in order keep her alive.
Jada's symptoms were frequent thirst, weight loss, pale skin, and many trips to the restroom. After Jada's parents spoke with friends about her symptoms, they explained that her condition was consistent with diabetes. Jada's parents decided to schedule a normal check up appointment the very next day to find out what was going on with her. A typical check-up, her parents thought, until her pediatrician came into the room with a look of shock on his face. Jada's parents were told that she needed to go to emergency immediately. Jada's blood sugar levels had reached nearly 6 times that of a normal person's sugar count. Jada's sugar count was so high, that had her parents not taken her to see a doctor that day she could have went into a diabetic coma, seizure or worse, died. Jada would on this day be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Jada's parents asked themselves how could this be? There was no family history of the condition, and they had always thought diabetes was a condition attributed to unhealthy eating habits. This is when they discovered the truth about type 1 diabetes. There is currently no cure (yet) or any known cause of the condition. Jada's life has changed but she is blessed to be alive. Jada and her family pray everyday that a cure is found for the condition, and it seems the doctors and researchers are really close to developing a cure. Jada is hoping that a cure is found for the many people, like herself, that are currently managing the condition today. She is hoping that with the help of her family and people like YOU, who are pledging support to JDRF, a cure is found within her lifetime.
Together, #TeamJada is walking to help JDRF continue to fund life-changing type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and create a world without T1D. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure—yet. Your support can help change that.
By donating or joining #TeamJada today, you can help fund research that impacts the lives of the millions of children, adults, and families challenged by T1D every day. With your support, we will help JDRF turn Type One into Type None. Thank you.
