Frequently Asked Questions
What is type 1 diabetes (T1D)?
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas are mistakenly destroyed by the body's immune system. T1D seems to have a genetic component. It occurs in children and adults. Its causes are not fully known, and there is currently no cure. People with T1D are dependent on injected or pumped insulin to survive.
How can I find my local JDRF chapter?
JDRF has chapters throughout the United States and five international affiliates. To find your local JDRF chapter, click here or call 888-533-9255.
Is there a registration fee?
No, JDRF One Walks is open to everyone and does NOT require a registration fee but we welcome and encourage all participants to fundraise and make a donation. Fun fact, the average walker raises over $400 for research to help cure T1D.
Do I need to register ahead of time?
Yes. Registering online gives you access to a number of great fundraising resources and lets us keep you updated on the latest JDRF and Walk info. It also gives us an idea of how many people to expect at each Walk, so we can plan ahead.
How do I register my family?
Each walker over 16 should register on their own. If you have children under 16, you have the option to add children under during your registration. This is the only time you will be able to register them so they are linked to your household.
Look for the "Register My Child" button on the last step of registration. Adding your child (or children) will ensure that all event communications are sent to your email address.
All other individuals in the household that do not fall under the "child" registration category will need to register themselves with their own unique email addresses.
If I participated last year, how do I get my login information?
To retrieve your login information, visit this page. Above the LOG IN button, there is a "Forgot Username or Password" link that will assist you in retrieving this information.
Can I participate in JDRF One Walk if I'm not on a team?
Yes, you can choose to walk and fundraise individually. But walking with friends, family or coworkers can make the Walk more enjoyable and rally even more support for JDRF.
How can I join or create a team?
When you register, you can choose to join an existing team or create your own by registering as a team captain.
What is the role of team captain?
Team captains serve as the main point of contact for most communication from your local chapter. As your team's leader, you set your team's fundraising goal, share your reason for walking to recruit other walkers to join you, raise money for T1D research and have a lot of fun along the way. You are not alone though, JDRF provides tools, tips and other resources to help you build a successful team.
Is there a fundraising minimum?
No, but we encourage every participant to support JDRF by making a donation and fundraise. Our average walker raises over $400 and our average team raises more than $2500 to help create a world without T1D. Every dollar counts!
How are donations made?
Donations can be made via cash, check or online. All checks should be made payable to JDRF.
Do you accept employer-matching donations?
Yes! Talk to your human resources department to find out if your company participates in our matching gift program or search the matching gift database. You can double or even triple your fundraising contribution to JDRF.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes, all donations to JDRF are tax-deductible.
How do I get a JDRF One Walk t-shirt?
Any participant who raises or donates $100 or more will receive an official JDRF One Walk T-shirt in the mail.
Can I fundraise after the Walk?
Yes, any funds submitted within four weeks of the Walk are included in qualifying totals for individual fundraising rewards and team awards. Any funds submitted after that are still accepted and although they won't qualify you for rewards, they still go towards life-changing T1D research.
What kind of support will I receive?
JDRF chapter staff can assist you every step of the way with helpful fundraising resources, and any other support you may need. And your online Walk Participant Center is filled with great fundraising tools and resources to help you be successful.
What is V1P?
V1P status is exclusively awarded to our top 5% of fundraisers who individually raise $1,000 or more. To celebrate your dedication to raising money for T1D research, you'll receive special V1P recognition on walk day!
Can I earn any rewards for fundraising?
Yes! When you fundraise for JDRF One Walk, you help get us closer to a world without T1D. To thank you for all your hard work, we offer some great fundraising rewards. After your final donations are tallied, you can select a reward based on your fundraising total. There are multiple levels starting at $500 and the more you raise, the more options you can choose from. Check them out here!
In addition to these rewards, you can also earn a JDRF One Walk t-shirt when you raise $100!
